Warning Over Need To Properly Clean Firefighters’ Protective Clothing
The protective clothing worn by firefighters needs to be thoroughly cleaned after every use, otherwise it could put those who wear it at greater risk of developing cancer due to the high levels of chemicals absorbed by the fabric.
Researchers at the University of Central Lancashire discovered that high levels of harmful chemicals remain in their clothing after being exposed to smoke and that it is skin absorption - rather than inhalation of fumes - that is the leading cause of cancer among those working in the fire service.
They also found that the measures recommended for cleaning flame retardant jackets, other protective clothing and equipment aren’t being effectively implemented.
Lead researcher and professor in fire chemistry and toxicity at the institution Anna Stec commented: “The UK must do more to tackle the growing issue of cancer in firefighters - we already know the incidence of cancer is higher amongst this profession compared to the general public, and that it is their leading cause of death.”
Making sure that the best practice for cleaning protective clothing and equipment is followed is just one of the necessary steps, she added.
National officer with the FBU and former firefighter Sean Starbuck told Sky News that the reason firefighters are being exposed to these harmful chemicals is because protective clothing isn’t being cleaned properly or regularly enough.
“There is such a low awareness of what contaminants are and of the dangers they pose to human health,” he stated.
Cleaning this gear properly is so important because failing to do so means that firefighters’ skin is exposed to the toxins for a greater length of time, thereby increasing their risk of cancer.
