Having the correct type of high-visibility clothing on in the workplace has become one of the most important aspects of health and safety in recent years.
Make sure your clothing is made to The Rail Industry Standard RIS-3279-TOM
Standard requirements include:
- Visibility
- Safety
- Awareness
All high visibility clothing products have to incorporate both fluorescent and retro-reflective materials. GO/RT 3279 and RIS-3279-TOM specifies an orange fluorescent colour.
The old Railway Group Standard GO / RT 3279 has now been replaced by The Rail Industry Standard RIS-3279-TOM but don't worry, any garments that are certified to GO/RT 3279 are compliant to the new RIS-3279-TOM standard.

Ensure clothing is up to EN ISO 20471 standards to give you maximum visibility for oncoming cars.
There are 3 options for this:
Class 1 garments have the minimum level of visibility required for any person working on a private road. They can be used in conjunction with a higher classed garment
The Class 1 requirements are:
- 2 metres of 5cm wide reflective tape
- 0.14m² of background material
- 0.1m² of retro reflective material
Class 2 garments are required for people working on or near A or B roads. This standard is also necessary for delivery drivers.
The Class 2 requirements are:
- 2.6 metres of 5cm wide reflective tape
- 0.5m² of background material
- 0.13m² of retro reflective material
Class 3 garments offer the greatest level of visibility for people close to motorways, dual-carriageways, high-speed roads and airports.
The Class 3 requirements are:
- 4 metres of 5cm wide reflective tape
- 0.8m² of background material
- 0.2m² of retro reflective material

EN ISO 20471 :2013 is the revised version of the EN 471 high visibility PPE standard
EN 343 workwear certification relates to waterproofing and breathability.
EN 343 standard code is split into two digits, such as EN 343 class 3.3
The first digit denotes its water penetration resistance, whilst the second digit denotes its breathability
EN343 Resistance to Water Penetration is subdivided into three sub-levels:
Class 3 affords the highest level of foul weather protection,
Class 2 provides an intermediate foul weather protection,
Class 1 provides the lowest level of foul weather protection.
EN343 Breathability is also subdivided into three sub-levels:
Class 3 affords the highest level of breathability,
Class 2 provides an intermediate level of breathability
Class 1 is not classified as breathable under the standard.
If you spend a lot of time working outside, the EN 343 class 3.2 or 3.3 garments are perfect, as they keep the rain out while allowing your sweat to escape.
