1. Start With the Hazard

What are we protecting the wearer from?

This can make suitable goggles more appropriate where the risk assessment identifies hazards such as dust, droplets or liquid splash.
Goggles may be:
- Directly ventilated
- Indirectly ventilated
- Non-ventilated
The ventilation design is important because it can affect both wearer comfort and the types of hazards the goggles are suitable for.
For example, a highly ventilated goggle might be comfortable in some working environments but unsuitable for a particular splash or fine-particle hazard.

3. What Does EN 166 Mean?
EN 166 is one of the standards you'll commonly encounter when looking at safety eyewear already in use in UK workplaces.
It covers personal eye protection and includes requirements relating to areas such as optical and mechanical performance.
However, PPE standards evolve.
You may increasingly encounter products certified against the newer EN ISO 16321 series for occupational eye and face protection.
This means that two suitable products may display different standard references depending on when and how they were certified.

4. Understanding the Markings on Safety Glasses
Those small letters and numbers printed or moulded into safety eyewear aren't there for decoration.
They can provide important information about the protection offered by the product.
Depending on the applicable standard and product, markings can identify information such as:
- Manufacturer
- Optical performance
- Mechanical strength
- Field of use
- Lens properties
- Filter performance
- Additional protective characteristics

Never assume appearance equals performance.
5. Impact Protection – What Do the Letters Mean?
On products marked to EN 166, you may encounter mechanical strength markings such as:

7. Clear, Smoke, Yellow or Other Lenses?
Safety glasses are available with a variety of lens colours, and the choice isn't purely cosmetic.
Clear Lenses
Clear lenses are the standard choice for many indoor and general workplace applications where eye protection is required without intentionally reducing visible light.
Smoke or Tinted Lenses
Suitable tinted safety eyewear can be useful for outdoor work and bright conditions where its specification matches the application.
Yellow or Amber Lenses

11. What About Contact Lenses?
Wearing contact lenses doesn't remove the need for appropriate workplace eye protection.
If the risk assessment requires safety spectacles or goggles, the wearer still needs appropriate PPE.
Specific working environments may introduce additional considerations, so these should be addressed through the workplace risk assessment and appropriate occupational guidance.
12. Safety Glasses and Face Shields Aren't the Same Thing
A face shield provides broader coverage of the face, but this doesn't automatically mean it replaces safety spectacles or goggles.
For some hazards, the correct solution may be:

13. Make Sure Your PPE Works Together

- Ear defenders

Each item might work perfectly well on its own but become uncomfortable or potentially interfere with another item when worn together.
