Cyclist Dies In Collision With Car

A cyclist and father of three was killed when he was biking home from his local pub in Abingdon, Oxfordshire, and was hit by a car on New Year’s Eve – which an inquest has just ruled was an accident.

According to the Oxford Times, Tony Woods was biking along the A415 on his way back to his home in Marcham when he was struck by the vehicle. The driver of the car, Colin Nurden, told the court that he had been travelling below the speed limit and couldn’t see Mr Woods until it was too late – perhaps because Mr Woods wasn’t wearing any high visibility clothing at the time.

Mr Woods’ mother, Daphne Ellender, was quoted as saying: “Tony was a loving son and loved his family. He was always very good to me. He had many friends locally as well. He had it all going for him. Maybe now we’ll never get an answer to what happened.”

The best way to stay safe on a bike, especially if you’re riding at night time, is to make sure you have lights on your bike and that you wear high vis clothes like trousers and jackets so that drivers can see you in enough time to stop, thus preventing accidents like this from taking place.

As a cyclist, you should ride well of the curb, avoid riding on the inside of large vehicles and follow the Highway Code, observing all road signs and traffic lights. You can find further safety advice on the Think! Website.
