Drivers Want High Visibility Clothing To Be Mandatory

High visibility clothing should be mandatory for cyclists, say drivers.

Speaking in a poll conducted by FairFuel UK of 10,000 drivers on behalf of the Daily Mail, 73 per cent of motorists reported they thought the wearing of fluorescent clothing should be mandatory.

This was alongside 80 percent of want cyclists to be forced to take out insurance and 90 per cent wanted cyclists to be prosecuted for dangerous driving. FairFuel was launched by Quentin Willson and Howard Cox to challenge fuel costs with a petition that garnered over 1,000 signatures several years ago. They think that high vis clothing should be made mandatory in order for safety to be improved for all people on the road.

This is in addition to wearing helmets and using lights they say.  They also argue there should be greater take up of the cycling proficiency test, in order to protect cyclists, motorists and pedestrians.

The test used to be taken routinely as schools but is no longer widely available. It is thought that by reintroducing these as standard expectations could be better monitored between the different types of road user.

Despite this there is some antagonism, with many cyclists arguing that unnecessary laws should not be introduced.

Cycling UK policy director Roger Geffen told BikeBiz: “It makes no sense to impose unnecessary new rules and costs on would-be cyclists, particularly children.

“The top priority must be to create safe, cycle-friendly streets and junctions, while strengthening the enforcement of our existing traffic rules, rather than adding new ones.”
