Are Dark School Uniforms Endangering Your Children?

The days may be getting longer by ten minutes each day, but it’s still very dark in the early mornings and early evenings – primetime for parents taking their kids to school and picking them up each day, unfortunately.

Interestingly, school uniforms tend to be dark which means that it can be very difficult indeed for motorists to see them as they cross the road. You’d hope that your school would hire a lollipop lady to help little ones get from one side to the other safely, but this isn’t always the case and as a parent it’s still your responsibility to ensure the safety of your children.

To that end, why don’t you consider asking your school to invest in high visibility shorts, jackets or shirts for youngsters so that drivers can easily see them in the morning and at night. Children living in rural areas especially, where there are sure to be fewer lamplights shining, might benefit from wearing high visibility clothes such as this.

Winter weather can be pretty tricky to navigate safely so it’s not just the dark days and nights that you have to think about either. In London, for example, the last few days have seen an increase in fog and pollution, so it might be harder for drivers to spot small children crossing the road thanks to reduced visibility.

Why don’t you get in touch with your child’s school and see what, if anything, they intend to do to keep your little ones safe. Suggesting high vis clothes may be a positive step forward for everyone.
