89-Year-Old Campaigns For Cyclist Road Safety
A retired art teacher is doing her bit to improve road
safety for cyclists in Cambridge by handing out free high visibility jackets
and other clothing to bikers in the local area.
According to the
Cambridge News, 89-year-old Janet Slade was inspired to take action after
seeing numerous cycling casualties while at her local hospital.
Since last November, Ms Slade has been offering neon
visibility vests out to any cyclists keen to listen to her about road safety.
She said: “I went into hospital for another reason and they were saying they
have wards full of people who have been in accidents. I hear the ambulances
every day and I guessed that many of the calls out were for accidents.”
She also went on to suggest that cyclists also wear white
boots to increase their visibility while out on the roads, explaining that if
you wear these you can be seen in the dark, in the rain, at night and in the
early morning light.
Back in November, a 33-year-old cyclist was hit and killed
in Leeds by a man driving a Volkswagen Golf at night time. At this time of
year, it’s vital that cyclists do all they can to protect themselves as vision
is reduced significantly thanks to the darker evenings and shorter days.
As well as wearing hivis cothing, make sure
that you have a light on the back or front of your bike so that drivers can see
you easily as they approach. If it means the difference between life and death,
it’s surely worth doing.
