Does Your Dog Wear High Vis Clothing?
The winter is a wonderful time to go for lots of lovely
walks with your dogs as even though it’s chilly the weather can be beautiful
when it’s crisp and cold, and the sun is shining. However, you do need to take
a bit more care when dog-walking at this time of year than you might have to do
during the summer.
Because the days are so much shorter in the winter, make
sure that you either put some high visibility clothing on your dog before you
go out or take a jacket with you that you can put on him or her later if you’re
out after the sun goes down.
If you’re not sure about putting a coat on your dog (which not
only increases the animal’s visibility but can also help to keep them warm as
it gets colder in the evenings), you could perhaps consider putting a flashing
neon collar on them for night-time walks to alert drivers to your presence.
As for yourself, you’d also be wise to get dressed up in
something high vis so you can be seen, as well as your dog. If you want an
extra level of precaution, why don’t you take a torch with you as well –
especially important if you’re going to be walking your dog down country roads.
You can’t just assume that drivers will be able to see you
and stop in time, and don’t forget that the roads
could be icy so the more time you give motorists to react the better.
