High Vis Awareness Horse Ride Takes Place After Horse Put Down
Following a tragic accident on the roads that saw a horse put down as a result, the Canewdon Equestrian group was set up to hold a high visibility awareness horse ride to help improve horse rider safety.
According to the Echo, rider Laura Thorogood was knocked off her horse, Angel, when a car drove into the back of them while she was riding in the road. The horse had to be put down at the scene by a vet.
A petition organised by the group gathered some 380 signatures from towns and villages, as well as another 148 from people who keep their horsesin the local area. The ride was attended by Laureen Shaw and George Ioannou, Rochford District councillors, who have lent their support to the campaign.
Claire Lilly who helped organise the campaign said: "There was one incident with a blue Transit van which came up fast and overtook us on a blind bend, which goes to show why this campaign is needed. It's such a small minority. Most people have been so supportive."
British Horse Society figures show that if you wear
high vis clothing while out on your horse, you give motorists an extra three seconds for them to react, which could meanthe difference between life and death. Bear this in mind the next time you plan to take your horse for a ride. There are no laws in place as yet that require you to wear such clothes, but you would be wise to dress appropriately if you want to enjoy your riding safely and responsibly.
