Cyclists have been warned about the
dangers of riding at night after a man was killed in a road traffic accident in
Leeds.
On Monday (November 14th), a
33-year-old male cyclist was hit on the A65 Kirkstall Road by a 22-year-old man
driving a Volkswagen Golf.
The incident occurred at 23:26 and the
car, which was on its way towards the city centre, overturned on impact and
crashed into a row of shops.
While the driver suffered serious injury
and was rushed to hospital, the cyclist died at the scene, according to a
report by West
Yorkshire Police.
Detective chief inspector Stuart Spencer
said: “This is clearly a very serious incident that has resulted in a man’s
death and we are carrying out extensive enquiries to establish the full
circumstances.”
The police closed part of the road for
forensic examination before re-opening it again at 12:30 the following day.
Two other passengers were in the car –
two men aged 23 and 36 – and were arrested on suspicion of causing death by
dangerous driving. However, they were later released on police bail.
Unfortunately, bicycle crashes become
more of a frequent occurrence during the wintertime as vision reduces
significantly with the darker evenings.
Earlier this month, cyclist Gary
Christie died in hospital after being fatally injured when struck by a car on
Carberry Road, Kirkcaldy, on November 1st. The collision, which
killed the 38-year-old father of two, occurred at around 16:15, the Courier
reported.
To protect yourself during the winter,
make sure you wear hivis
clothing when cycling.
