Meet Graham - The Road Safety Ambassador Built To Survive Car Crashes

A sculptor in Melbourne has come up with a mock-up body of what people would look like if they'd evolved to survive car crashes, with the creation sporting a giant chest to protect the rib cage and no neck so as to avoid whiplash.

Patricia Piccinini came up with Graham, as he has been dubbed, along with help from road safety engineer David Logan and leading trauma surgeon Christian Kenfield as part of the Victorian government's latest road safety campaign, the Daily Mail reports.

Graham's extra nipples are meant to mimic air bags while protecting the rib cage and his flat face is supposed to help protect his nose and ears. His chest, which has airbags between each rib, protects his heart. His skin is also thicker and tougher to help protect him from road rash and abrasions, while his strong legs give him enough power to jump out of the way of oncoming cars and his knees also bend in every direction so if he is hit by a car his legs won't break.

Dr Kenfield said: "The dangers of even low speeds such as 25, 30, 35 kilometres an hour is quite great. The most significant part of body for injury is the head. So as the headstops the brain actually keeps moving forward, smashing against the front part of the skull and then bouncing backwards and getting an injury on the back of the head as well."

As a pedestrian, it's as much your responsibility to remain safe while walking near roads as it is motorists'. You should always look both ways when crossing the road and use the designated crossings instead of making your way over the road at a random place. You would also be wise to wear high visibility jackets or similar clothes when walking at night or in poor conditions - and perhaps always make sure young children wear them when on their way to school and back.
