Olympic Cyclist’s Mother Dies In Bike Crash With Truck

The mother of an Olympic cyclist has been killed after she was out on her bike in Connah’s Quay, Deeside, north Wales, and had a collision with a pickup truck.

Carol Boardman, mother to Chris, was taken to hospital with serious injuries and sadly later died, the BBC reports.

Chris, 47, took to Twitter to pay tribute to his mother who he said “never lost her love of the bike or competing. A stealth combatant and full of energy, mum was one of those individuals who could quietly turn anything into a contest.

”North Wales Police are now calling for any witnesses who may have further information about the accident to come forward, although it is already thought that the car involved was a white Mitsubishi L200 pickup.

While the BBC article did not make it clear whether Ms Boardman was wearing a high visibility shirt or other such clothing, cyclists around the UK may want to take this tragic accident as a warning that they should do all they can to ensure they’re easily spotted when out and about on their bikes.

High vis clothes make you stand out and alert both drivers and passersby to your presence. Vests, jackets, shorts and other such clothes have been fitted with highly reflective properties or are such a bright colour that people can identify them from a great distance. Wearing high vis gear could mean the difference between life and death so whether you’re a cyclist or a hiker, if you’re near a road it makes sense to wear something that makes you stand out.
